Radar Level Sensors

PowTechnology offer you 30 years’ experience recommending and supplying sensors. We work with over a hundred quality international manufacturers.

HOW DO RADAR LEVEL SENSORS WORK?

Continuous level measurement with radar works on the principal of microwaves. When a microwave signal is transmitted and targeted towards a medium, it reflects off the surface and is directed back to the sender. The time taken for the radar signal to travel to the level surface and back, reflects the distance it has had to travel. Thus, the sensor can calculate the medium’s level.

WHEN TO USE RADAR LEVEL SENSORS?

Radar level transmitters are positioned above the surface ‘looking’ down. No physical contact is required with the material being measured. Thus, radar level sensors are well suited to environments where a sensor cannot be simply dropped into the material for hygiene (food, beverage, pharmaceutical), practical (extreme viscosity) or corrosive (acidic, alkaline) reasons, for both solid and liquid media.

Radar measurements are largely unaffected by temperature, pressure and dust. They are also fully operational in a vacuum, unlike their ultrasonic counterparts.  Radar technology is therefore the optimal choice for applications where product characteristics and process conditions are constantly evolving (see Chemical industry applications).

BENEFITS OF USING RADAR LEVEL SENSORS

Historically, radar level sensors have been considered a very expensive solution. More recently, affordable, high-accuracy 80 GHz radar sensors have been developed. The high transmission frequency helps optimise the beam angle of the radar beam (and threfore its ability to focus) which means the radar beam will only reflect off the product surface, not off other internal fixture, such as agitators, increasing the accuracy of your readings.

Radar level sensors are highly durable, reliable and accurate sensors. They are used extensively across the globe for applications from water/ waste water, to petrochemical and the food industry.

Radar sensors do not have a blanking distance, meaning the measurement range is right up to the sensor surface. As such, radar is considered the most universal non-contact level technology.
